Stress, Hormones, and That Afternoon Crash ... What I’m Doing Differently

Stress, Hormones, and That Afternoon Crash ... What I’m Doing Differently

Ever hit 3 PM and feel like your brain is buffering, your mood is nosediving, and your only solution is another iced coffee or a sweet treat?
Yep. Been there. Too many times.

Turns out that daily “afternoon slump” isn’t just about needing a break, it’s your hormones waving a white flag.

Let’s break it down. I’ll share what I learned about cortisol crashes, blood sugar dips, and the tiny 2-minute ritual that helps me reset, no sugar crash or caffeine jitters required.

1. Why You Crave Sugar and Caffeine at 3 PM

By mid-afternoon, your cortisol, your body's main stress hormone, naturally dips.
Pair that with skipping lunch, eating a carb-heavy breakfast, or being under chronic stress (hi, modern life)... and boom: blood sugar drops, and your body screams for fast energy.

So you reach for coffee, cookies, or something salty. But those quick fixes only spike your blood sugar and stress hormones again, keeping you stuck in a loop of crash-crave-regret.

2. The Cortisol Crash Nobody Warns About

Here’s the thing: cortisol gets a bad rap, but it actually helps keep you energized and focused, when it’s balanced.
When it's not? You feel frazzled, foggy, and emotionally drained by 2 or 3 PM.

For women juggling work, kids, or both, chronic cortisol spikes from stress followed by big drops can throw off everything from your mood to your metabolism. (Yup, even that stubborn belly fat.)

3. My Afternoon Reset Ritual: takes 2 minutes, changes everything

So what do I do differently now?

I built myself a mini afternoon ritual. And yes, it only takes 2 minutes.

Here’s my go-to reset:

  • Step outside or open a window (hello, sunlight and fresh air)

  • A few deep belly breaths, even 3 helps. I have been using my shift to breathe better.

  • A glass of water with minerals or lemon

  • And my favorite part: a dropper of Nummies Energy. I take it in a straight sublingual mode. But you can mix it with juice or tea.

4. Why Adaptogens (Like Reishi) Are My Go-To at Work

Reishi is like a chill mentor for your nervous system.
It helps smooth out the highs and lows, without sedating you or giving you a fake energy buzz. I love it in the afternoon because it:

  • Supports adrenal function

  • Helps regulate cortisol

  • Keeps my mood steady and cravings in check

And the best part? When I’m on top of my adaptogen game, I don’t need that glass of wine at 5 or chocolate at 3. (Well, maybe just the good dark kind…)

5. What I Use Now Instead of Wine, Pills, or Coffee

Look, I love a good ritual. But I wanted one that worked for my body, not against it. That’s why I have been creating something new for you to help you regulate stress and boost your mood naturally, no pills, no wine, and definitely no crash later. We believe stress relief shouldn't come in the form of a wine bottle or a prescription pad. It should feel natural, nourishing, and even a little fun.
